Club de Cazadores Cubanos' Christmas banquet wraps up Copa
Cuba competition Club de Cazadores Cubanos celebrated its 2007 Christmas banquet at the Miami Rowing Club, located in Key Biscayne, Fla. The club is located on the bay with a view of downtown Miami. This year’s event began with hors d’oeuvres, followed by a paella cooked on site, dessert and coffee. Approximately 65 members and guests attended. The American and Cuban national anthems were played before dinner. We recounted the history of our club, which was founded in 1909, and viewed a slide presentation of pictures, newspaper clippings and other artifacts that were gathered by the late Mrs. Beba Macias. |

This was a very special year since our club was able to purchase the 1957 Copa Cuba Flyer Championship trophy from Mr. John Jennings, who won it at his first flyer shoot. We will always be grateful and thankful to Mr. Jennings for allowing us to bring back this treasured trophy. He passed away a few weeks before our dinner, and we would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the Jennings family. The Copa Cuba Championship shoots held during the year consist of Copa Cuba trap, skeet, sporting clays and flyers championship tournaments. Each member who participates in these events receives items just for competing. This year we gave out the following participation gifts: one event, embroidered CCC cap; two events, embroidered shooting towel; three events, embroidered polo shirt; four events, embroidered long-sleeved shirt; five events, embroidered jacket; all six events, free membership for 2008. Every member loves to compete in the Copa Cuba championship events since they know they will always go home with something in addition to any trophies won. |

This year the high-over-all winner was Ray Perez, who took home the 1957 Copa Cuba Trophy to display until October. Last year Ray’s son, 14-year-old Roberto, was the HOA victor. At the banquet the participation gifts and trophies won at the Copa Cuba shoots were given out. A special award was presented to a member or non-member who is not of Cuban descent. This is a person who has demonstrated a love of our culture and has great enthusiasm for our club. This year two shooters—FTA president Skipper Wright and FTA Hall of Fame chairman Jim Beasley—were presented the Honorary Cuban Award, an embroidered jacket and plaque. They join a small group of other Honorary Cubans: Dave Bohlender, Larry Grenevicki and Andy Davidson. The night ended with a raffle, where first prize was a 26" LCD TV. The club would like to thank Beasley, who donated a decanter etched with the club logo and a custom Club de Cazadores belt buckle. |
